Portuguese Water Dogs, or Porties as most people end up calling them, have been part of our family for years. We raise a few litters at our home in Coshocton County, in eastern Ohio’s Amish country. We’re about two hours from Columbus, Cleveland, and Pittsburgh.

The puppies are born in the house and grow up in it, underfoot. By the time one goes home with you, it’s already used to people, noise, and being picked up. What "Family Raised" Actually Means Here

You’ll see that phrase on almost every puppy website in the country. Here’s what it means at our house.

Our kid is with the puppies from the day they’re born, talking to them and gently petting them, and that keeps going every day until they leave. There’s no kennel building and no barn. They hear a dishwasher, a vacuum, and the door opening, because that’s the house they live in.

We raise one breed. We usually have five or six females of breeding age, and how many litters that works out to changes from year to year. Every mother lives here, and you can meet her.

Some of our litters are sired by a stud who lives somewhere else, and that’s on purpose. Porties came through a narrow genetic bottleneck, and the whole breed today traces back to a small number of dogs. Breeding only to the males you happen to own is how a small gene pool gets smaller. When the right match for one of our girls lives in another state, we go to him. It costs more and takes more planning, and it’s better for the puppies.

An Ohio Portuguese Water Dog Breeder You Can Visit

We don’t publish our address. When someone is seriously interested in a particular puppy and wants to meet our dogs first, we set up a time and send directions. No drop-ins, mostly because we’re a family and we’re not always home.

When you come, you’ll meet the puppies and their mother, and see the room they were born in.

Most Ohio families pick up in person. If the drive doesn’t work, we’ll figure out getting your puppy to you when we talk.

Travel Times

Times are approximate and depend on where in the city you’re starting.

If you’d rather fly, Akron-Canton (CAK) is the closest airport to us. Columbus (CMH), Cleveland (CLE), and Pittsburgh (PIT) all work too. Which one makes sense usually comes down to where you’re flying from and what the fares look like. Some families fly in, rent a car, come meet the puppies, and fly home with their puppy in the cabin. We can also arrange to have your puppy flown to an airport near you.

What You'll Pay, and Why

Portuguese Water Dog puppies from a breeder doing full health testing generally run $2,500 to $4,500. Current pricing is always on our available puppies page.

Price tracks what’s behind the puppy. Genetic testing, hip evaluations, and eye exams cost real money, and they’re usually the first thing cut when a price drops well below that range. Be wary of anyone charging extra for a color. Color isn’t rare in this breed and it shouldn’t change what you pay.

Our Breeding Program

Our dogs are genetically tested, and we’re strict about which ones we breed and how often.

Every puppy also gets ENS, short for Early Neurological Stimulation. It’s a handling routine done in the first couple of weeks, a few seconds at a time, that seems to help puppies handle stress better later on. The detail on that, and on what we test for, is in our breed guide.

How to Check Out a Breeder Before You Pay Anyone

Ohio has a reputation problem around commercial dog breeding. If you’ve been researching breeders here, you’ve run into it. It’s a fair thing to worry about.

Here’s what to ask anyone, including us:

  • How many litters do you have a year?
  • How many breeds do you raise?
  • Can I visit and meet the mother of my puppy?
  • Will you walk me through your health testing?

A breeder who can’t answer those, or won’t let you visit, has told you something.

Common Questions

Q:Can I visit before I decide?

A:Yes, and we'd rather you did. We're on a mini farm in Fresno, Ohio, about an hour and a half from Columbus and under two hours from Cleveland, Akron, or Canton. Come meet the mother, see the room the puppies are raised in, and watch our adults be normal dogs out in the yard. Nothing gets staged for visitors. You're seeing our house on an ordinary day. Bring the kids and ask hard questions. Most families tell us the visit is what settled it. Once in a while someone meets a full grown Portie, decides it's more dog than they want, and goes home without one. That works too. Call (330) 440-9292 and we'll find a time.

Q:Do I have to drive to you?

A:No. Pickup here in Fresno is an option, not a requirement, and plenty of our families never make the drive. Anywhere east of the Mississippi, we use a ground transport service we've worked with for years. It's a climate controlled puppy bus with professional handlers who keep you updated the whole way and hand your puppy to you at your front door, for $375. If the bus doesn't reach you, we book a flight to the airport nearest you and you pick your puppy up there, for $595. A few areas sit off the ground route, including upper Michigan, upper Wisconsin, upper Maine, and Rhode Island. Tell us where you are and we'll tell you which way makes sense. Q:Are Portuguese Water Dogs hypoallergenic?

A:They're considered a hypoallergenic breed, and it's why a lot of families look at them. The honest answer is that no dog is truly hypoallergenic. Porties have a single coat with no undercoat, so they shed very little, and loose hair tends to stay in the coat instead of on your floor. But people react to proteins in dander and saliva, not just hair, and reactions vary from person to person. Some people with allergies do fine with a Portie. Some don't. We go into this in our breed guide, including the blanket test we run with families first. We send home a blanket one of our adults has slept on, you keep it in your bedroom for three to five nights, and you learn something real before you've committed to anything.

Q:How do I know you're not a puppy mill?

A:Come see. That's the shortest answer, and the invitation is open. The longer one: Jamin and Marnita raise every litter in our home in Fresno, Ohio. We do a few litters a year, and we have never sold a puppy that somebody else bred. Both parents are DNA tested for GM1, JDCM, and prcd-PRA and hip screened through OFA, and we'll put the results in front of you. Puppies get early neurological stimulation in their first three weeks, then they grow up underfoot, so by eight weeks yours already knows the sound of a vacuum, a doorbell, and a busy kitchen. They go home vet checked, vaccinated, AKC registered, with a one year genetic health guarantee and our phone number for as long as you have the dog. A mill won't invite you into the living room.
